EU Officially Implements Retaliatory Tariffs Against US From April 15

The European Commission announced on Wednesday that it has received consensus from European Union (EU) member states to implement a series of retaliatory measures against the tariffs imposed by the United States, especially in the steel and aluminum sectors. These measures will officially take effect from April 15, 2025.

According to the plan, the EU will impose additional tariffs of mainly 25% on many imported products from the United States, in direct response to the tariffs that Washington is maintaining. Although the detailed list of affected products has not been released, officials said the relevant items will focus on the metal and heavy industry sectors.

The European Commission said it is also continuing to consider additional responses, in particular to the expanded US tariffs on the automotive sector, a key industry for many EU countries such as Germany, France and Italy.

The triggering of these retaliatory measures marks a significant escalation in trade tensions between the world's two largest economies. It is also a move that affirms the EU's stance in defending the bloc's interests against increasingly protectionist trade policies from the US.

A spokesperson for the European Commission said: "We are always open to dialogue to resolve differences, but we will not hesitate to take the necessary actions to protect the internal market and European industry."
